The heart of our mission is connecting compassionate donors with the Caribbean’s critical needs.

Grants/Grantees

Grants

The CCF grant program helps Caribbean groups and communities help themselves. We and our donors want to improve quality of life in lasting ways.

Projects: The grants support self-directed social and economic development--especially for underserved populations and through innovative initiatives. To match resources of money and knowledge to challenging needs of a community, the CCF consults and works with Caribbean national foundations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Eligibility: Grants from unrestricted funds are made primarily to NGO's based in and serving the nations of the Caribbean region, Central America, and the Bahamas.

Funding: The foundation is at the beginning of its work. In this initial phase, we will consider funding requests of up to $10,000. However, grants will generally be smaller. The foundation awards funds following careful review by staff, community leaders, and the board of directors.

Restrictions: In general, grants are not made from CCF unrestricted funds for:

  • routine operating expenses
  • endowments
  • building campaigns, unless there is compelling evidence that such support is vital to a priority need
  • computers
  • fundraising events, celebration functions, fundraising feasibility studies
  • recurring requests (typically more than three) from an organization for the same purpose
  • religious organizations for religious purposes
  • individuals
  • existing obligations or to replenish resources used to pay for such purposes

Use of funds will be budgeted, overseen and dependent upon size audited, by CCF.

Application: For more information, contact the CCF.

Grantees

NGO Strengthening

CCF granted $10,000 to the Florida Association for Volunteer Action in the Caribbean and the Americas (FAVACA) www.favaca.org, to develop training material and pilot an Institutional Strengthening Program for the Non-Profit Sector in Barbados. This award was made possible by a gift from the Shepard Broad Law Center at Nova Southeastern University www.nsulaw.nova.edu. Thirty-seven participants attended the event at the Grand Barbados Beach Resort August 6-8, 2008. The training was jointly hosted by the Barbados Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (BANGO). Representative of the feedback on the workshops was this: Finally, let me commend FAVACA and the team for fitting the bill as we had set out and allowing us the input through teleconference and e-mails. I can’t say anything more than that we are very happy and satisfied at the work done by FAVACA.

Youth Development

CCF has partnered with The Young Americas Business Trust (YABT), www.ybiz.net, in launching a Caribbean component (TIC – Caribbean) of YABT’s Talent and Innovation Competition of the Americas – (TIC Americas). YABT is a nonprofit corporation working with the General Secretariat of the Organization of the American States (OAS). TIC Americas is an international young entrepreneur competition that goes beyond traditional business plan competitions to establish an on-going process of young entrepreneur development, incorporating training, mentoring, and product testing to accelerate the development of innovative young entrepreneurs.

A CCF US$3000 grant to YABT permitted the Caribbean winner of the Talent and Innovation Competition (TIC Americas) WMEP – Grenada to participate in the regional competition conference in San Pedro Sula, Honduras May 29-30 and receive their award.

Disaster Relief

The Foundation offers a simple mechanism to speed cash donations to human needs in the region. The funds target community initiatives endorsed by national emergency organizations of affected countries. In a recent example, CCF provided more than $10,000 in Cayman relief contributions gathered by Miami resident Marcus Simmonds of Tortuga Imports Inc. CCF, with the Government of the Cayman Islands, the Cayman Islands National Recovery Fund and Cayman National Bank, focused on the greatest immediate needs following hurricane Ivan, basic housing and feeding programs. CCF charges no fee for this service.

To support relief and recovery efforts in the region, simply make your cheque payable to the Caribbean Community Foundation, indicate which country you would like to support and mail your contribution to:
